A breakthrough biomarker for bacterial sepsis research
At Mercodia, we are committed to supporting researchers by providing accurate and precise tools for faster, more reliable results.
“The homodimeric form of HNL is a novel biomarker with great potential for studying antibiotic response in sepsis. We believe the new HNL Homodimer ELISA is an excellent tool for bacterial sepsis research, offering superior and more dependable results compared with other typical biomarkers,” says Gianni Garcia, Director of R&D, Mercodia.
What is HNL Homodimer?
Human Neutrophil Lipocalin (HNL) is a glycoprotein stored in neutrophils and released upon activation. Its homodimeric form is neutrophil-specific, making it highly relevant for infection-related processes. By binding bacterial siderophores and limiting iron availability, HNL plays a major role in innate immunity.
Why is it important?
Research by Venge et al. shows that homodimeric HNL offers a precise reflection of neutrophil activation in bacterial sepsis. Because its levels fall rapidly when treatment is effective, it enables sensitive monitoring of both disease progression and antibiotic response. This makes it a valuable complement to, and in many cases more informative than, traditional biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT).
“The HNL Homodimer is the superior biomarker to monitor the successful antibiotic treatment in patients with sepsis and other serious bacterial infections” says Professor Per Venge, Uppsala University.
Key advantages with HNL Homodimer
✔ The HNL Homodimer is a novel biomarker with potential as research clinical tool for the study of antibiotic response in sepsis
✔ Elevated levels of HNL Homodimer have association with sepsis in critically ill patients
✔ HNL Homodimer has outperformed C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) in the distinction between viral and bacterial infections
✔ HNL Homodimer has been shown superior to CRP and PCT for the detection of bacterial infection in sepsis patients
✔ HNL is a great tool for bacterial sepsis research and advancements
